Blue Bloods: My Story Song

As I look back on my journey, I am reminded of the twists and turns that led me to where I am today. It all began during my university days, when I had received the appropriate vaccinations, but little did I know that some things were not covered.

It was then that I started experiencing symptoms that left me feeling quite frightened. My GP told me it was possible that I could have contracted a needle stick injury or come into contact with contaminated fluid in my working environment as an Anaesthetic Practitioner. She also mentioned the importance of getting tested for various types of hepatitis, including A, B, C, D, and E.

As my symptoms persisted, I became increasingly unwell. I was sweating constantly, experiencing itchiness, especially on my feet at night. I had seen many patients who had their gallbladders removed and were cured of their symptoms, so I thought it could be that for me.

A few weeks later, my blood tests continued to show elevated levels, and my GP agreed that it could either resolve on its own or a gallbladder scan would help determine the cause. I was put on a waiting list for the scan, but in the meantime, some of my doctor colleagues mentioned the possibility of gallstones.

Working in a hospital gave me the opportunity to ask some of my colleagues about what this could mean. They agreed to run some blood tests, and a week later, I received a call telling me that a few of my Liver Function Tests (LFTs) were out of range.

In April 2018, I began doing a lot of overtime, which took a toll on my body. I was constantly feeling exhausted, nauseous, and had a bitter taste in my mouth. Despite the challenges, I loved my job and found joy in helping patients wake up from surgery as an Anaesthetic Practitioner.

However, my exhaustion only worsened over time. I spent most days studying for my Operating Department Practice course while working long hours at the hospital. It was then that I began to feel like I had glandular fever, which was later confirmed through a blood test.

Visiting my GP with complaints of upper abdominal pain and exhaustion led to an unexpected diagnosis: Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). I was just 22 years old at the time, and it felt like my world was turned upside down.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize that life is full of surprises, but it's how we respond to them that defines us. My story may be long-winded and shocking, but it has taught me the importance of resilience, compassion, and the value of seeking help when needed.
